Wine fit for Christmas (or any event)

Selecting a great wine should be a major priority for any discerning food and drink lover this Christmas, but selecting the perfect wine to pair with your perfect Christmas dinner does not have to be overwhelming.

We’ve chatted to our friend Barry Groves, the Yorkshire Wine Rascal, for his recommendations on wines.

Hand selected by him, these wines are available to order from this fabulous company that supplies wine from families, not factories, so it has the very best selection of lovingly produced wine at reasonable prices for you to enjoy.

“My selection of wines for this festive season has everything that you will require for a joyous Christmas and a very happy New Year,” said the Yorkshire Wine Rasca.

“Christmas should always start with some bubbles and this year I am recommending a Cava, a Prosecco and Champagne.  All are excellent wines and each feature the uniqueness of their geographical region.”

CAVA – 1+1=3 Cava Cygnus Organic Brut a Blend of Parellada, Xarel Lo, Macabeo grapes. Clean, fresh with touches of strawberry, cherry and raspberry with red fruits in the mouth and a long finish.

Price: £9.66

PROSECCO – La Farra Prosecco DOC Treviso Brut 100% Glera grape.

A fruity prosecco, with refreshing citrus notes that complement the ripe nectarine and peach flavours.

Price: £8.88

CHAMPAGNE – Thierry Triolet Brut 60% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 5% Pinot Meunier

Triolet Brut is a great balance of a light champagne with fruitiness and a touch of toastiness too.

Price: £18.11

“Any of these are suitable to celebrate Christmas Day and also to help you ring in the New Year,” explained the Yorkshire Wine Rascal

The Yorkshire Wine Rascal says: “Relax with one of our carefully sourced wines. I know it is difficult to choose, but try between my New and Old world selection:”

Argentina –  Terra Malbec 100% Malbec. – Hand-picked mid-April. Six months in French oak barrels followed by 6 months ageing in bottle. An intense red ruby colour with violet hues.  Clean with varietal aromas of mature red fruit, spices, vanilla and coffee.

Price: £7.20

Spain –  Marques de Castilla Crianza 2010 – 100% Tempranillo. Good aromatic intensity, with red fruits, toasty vanilla and sweet, soft tannins from the American oak. Round, well balanced and a sweet soft finish from the tannins.

Price: £7.60

South Africa – Aaldering – Lady M Pinotage 100% Pinotage. Initial notes of Mulberries, raspberries, Bing Cherries, cinnamon and spice on the nose.  Clean, fresh and elegant with touches of plum pudding and silky tannins.

Price: £15.69

France –  Chateau Croix Des Pins – Ventoux Bio rouge – Les Trois Villages – Blend:  Grenache 80%, Syrah 10%, Mouvédre 10%. Hand harvested. Aromas of dark chocolate, liquorice, evolving towards spicy and peppery notes.  Palate:  Soft, round tannins, berries and strawberries with notes of dried fruits and nuts. £8.58

Chile – Casa Donoso – Evolucion Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Citrus, lime and grapefruit together with notes of freshly cut grass with an aromatic finish.

Price: £7.94

France – Francois Millet – Sancerre.  The aromatics hint at smoky preserved lemons with a rosemary and sage twist. Palate is fresh and bright, with forward citrus fruits that drive the energy to the finish. It’s stylish and generous, but with some austerity to keep the fruit in check.

Price: £13.19

South Africa – Chenin Blanc – 100% Chenin Blanc. A really fruity dry wine, oozing with tropical fruits such as pineapple, combined with hints of citrus and dried apple.

Price: £5.99.

Australia – Churchview – Estate Range Chardonnay – A wonderful example of the purity of a Chardonnay. The aromas are fresh and lifted, dominated by orange blossom, white peach and fresh nectarines, with a lovely citrus character. The palate is full of those white fleshy fruits, with loads of flavour. The finish is soft and fruity, with long lingering flavours.

Price: £11.32

Thanks to the Yorkshire Wine Rascal for these recommendations that really hit the mark for taste and price.

What will I be drinking? Well, from this selection, it has to be the Champagne followed by the fabulous Argentinian Malbec for me.

Merry Christmas Everyone! Remember to drink  responsibly and drink quality.

Five Things to Do in West Yorkshire this Christmas Season

five of the best things to do in West Yorkshire this Christmas

I’m not going to lie, I love the festive season and personally it’s all about the build-up. There’s something rather uplifting about the Christmas season for me (even if it does now start super early but I’m not complaining!) from watching Christmas Movies on Channel 5 in the afternoon whilst I’m working (I’m the Queen of multitasking!) to the traditional selection of my very special Scotch pine Christmas tree with my now teenage son; I love this time of year.

I’ll be honest, it really is about that time from late November (OK, mid-November!) to Christmas Eve and over the years I’ve loved being involved in a huge array of different festive events, both professionally and socially and this year I plan to lap up as much Festive cheer as possible to keep me buzzing through the Winter months; and I don’t just mean I’m going to ‘Gin-gle’ all the way!

Therefore, based on events I’ve experienced in previous years, added with a little something new and always supporting friends, musicians, local creatives, businesses and venues, here’s my list of five things to do in West Yorkshire this Christmas Season.

So, what are you waiting for? Get booking your tickets, planning your days, shop independent and go and have some Christmas cheer.

Much Love

The Mode for… Events Top Three DIY Wedding and Events Venues

The Mode for…Events Top Three Wedding and Events Venues 2017

Now, it’s not unusual for you to hear me say I love a DIY wedding and events venue and I spend a lot of time researching great places where you can host your absolutely perfect, intimate and unique wedding or event without blowing your budget on grand facilities and gardens that you may never use.

I’m also a huge fan of the ‘dry hire’ venue because, to be quite frank, I don’t like being told what to do and which suppliers to use. I like the personal touch, creating a unique event with facilities that allow me to use the suppliers I love to work with or to be able to do things myself.

I don’t like to be told what menu I have to select from that only has 3 options and I definitely don’t like ridiculous bar prices for my friends to pay, so a menu of my favourite food and a free or realistically priced bar is a huge incentive for me to book a venue.

This was definitely the driving force and the brief in hunting for our own wedding venue  in 2015 and when hunting for venues for our own series of The MF Tasting Notes events in the last few months; I want blank spaces that would have a great feel about them, that I could personalise for the style of event, that I have complete freedom for food choices and no ridiculous bar or corkage charges.

I’ll be honest, that brief is not as easy as it may sound; these venues are tricky to find and they usually come on recommendation or luck! But I’m going to make it easy for you and give you my Top Three DIY wedding and events venues and save you some of the leg work in research.

These three venues, which are in no particular order because actually I love them all, are on point for creating a fabulous unique wedding or event. They have fabulous owners and staff and really give you the opportunity to let your creativity run wild and bring your wedding and event in on a sensible budget.

The Mode for… Events top three DIY wedding and events venues are:

Still not sold on the whole DIY element of doing everything yourself? Don’t panic. We’ve got you covered. With services from planning to coordination, styling to catering, here at Mode for…Events we can arrange your whole wedding or event for you and take all the strain off you and you’ll still get that unique and personal style whilst sticking to a sensible budget. We take time to really get to know you and your family so we totally deliver your dreams.

Recent DIY bride Laura Stroud had this to say after her wedding in October at Parwich Memorial Hall: “We are so grateful for everything you did for us.  It felt like you were part of our family. We had the most perfect of days and we will always be so thankful that you made everything run so smoothly and you even smiled the whole day with us when we know you must have been exhausted!  I know I said it on Saturday, but I knew as soon as we met I could trust you with our wedding ❤️. I’m not sure many people could handle my OCD planning like you did!”

We actually supplied planning support, coordination, catering, floral bouquets and ran the bar for the wedding of Laura and Graham at Parwich Memorial Hall and we loved every minute. The hall itself is one of the best equipped and most beautiful halls we’ve had the pleasure to work in. It was so easy to deliver a perfect event there and we can’t recommend it enough. We’re also dying to go back and do another wedding or event there now we’ve found it, not just for the hall itself but the beautfully amazing village it’s in. Definitely a perfect location.

Hargate Hall obviously holds a special place in our hearts as it’s where Simon and I got married in 2016 but with around 17 weddings undertaken there now in the last two years, supplying planning, coordination, catering, floristry and styling we are always wowed at how every wedding is different and would recommend this venue to everyone that wants somewhere that everyone can come and stay and have a great big party in your ‘own home’ for the weekend and we know just how to make it work for every style of event.

Recent bride Tiffany Chevis said: “Thank you so much for all your hard work. It was the perfect day and we couldn’t have done it without you.”

East Keswick Village Hall is a very special venue and a real gem in the crown of village halls. With lovely people helping to run the hall, a fabulous space that really can be styled from rustic to luxury and a fabulously beautiful location it offers a wonderful opportunity for your wedding and events. With great facilities for you and your suppliers, this hall is a perfect choice and again it’s getting us a little bit excited as it’s also our venue of choice for our own ‘A Little Gin and Jazz’ and ‘Wines of the Wars’ events in January and March 2018. So, if you want to check it out, come and party with us at these events and see how amazing it is for yourself!

So there’s our Mode for… Events Top Three DIY wedding and events venues. Go check them out now and drop me a message with any DIY wedding or events questions you have. Or, got Amazon and check out my Guide to DIY Weddings here!

Happy planning!

Bridesmaids and BBQs

The wedding of Antonia and Sam in early June at Hargate Hall was a wedding with a difference for sure.

With plans to marry on the day in Bakewell with close family before a celebration ceremony at Hargate Hall for all the guests, things quickly changed in the preceding weeks when our gorgeous bride Antonia, who is from the USA, encountered Visa issues, so the couple and their close family nipped to New York to get married!

So, with the official business out the way, it left us to organise a fabulous outdoor ceremony (even with the rain!) led by a friend before a relaxed BBQ style meal in the marquee and a night of music and dancing in the house.

This was a marriage of two amazing families and everyone chipped in getting things prepared under the watchful eye of Tabby and Sam’s mum Maura. The family created amazing floral displays and the marquee looked fabulous.

There was a huge bridal party with a selection of amazing gowns, a super-sized wedding cake hand-painted by Antonia’s mum (plus some special jiggery-pokery with fishing wire to keep the cake stand suspended!) and a relaxed atmosphere created by the many American and English guests.

It truly was a great wedding and as the guests sat down to a feast of BBQ specialities such as brisket, chicken wings and pit beans, there was an air of happiness and contentment.

This was one fabulous and happy wedding.

Congratulations to Antonia and Sam and thanks for letting us be a part of your amazing wedding.

Chic, Elegant and Oozing with Ambience

Chic, elegant and oozing with ambience – Maddie and Asa’s wedding will definitely go down in The Arches history books!

The May bank holiday saw The Arches play host to the most weddings we’ve ever held in the space of three days, and we were astounded by how intrinsically unique they all were. If there’s one thing that never ceases to amaze The Arches team it’s how each couple interpret the space differently, making each event unlike the one before.

Maddie and Asa saw the potential The Arches held from the moment they first walked through the door, and from the seed of potential grew the grandest of plans to transform the space into a botanical candlelit wonderland. They knew from the off that they wanted a stunning floral arrangement to take centre stage at the base of their aisle, they knew they didn’t want a traditional archway, and they knew they needed someone they wholeheartedly trusted to turn their ideas into a reality! Enter Fiona Pickles of Firenza Floral Design armed with the brief “Surprise us!” And what a surprise it was to witness the transformation of the ceremony area…

Fiona’s creations are always individual, one off designs; using the treasures of her own garden (along with some from other English growers) the floral installation created at the base of the aisle was truly breath-taking and helped set the perfect tone for the wedding. With assistance from the lovely ladies at Moss & Stone, and Fox & Thorn Floral Design, Fiona hit gold with this dream team of fantastic florists.

It’s rarely seen as fortunate to have thunderstorms and heavy clouds on your wedding day, however I couldn’t help but feel as though the minimal sunlight allowed The Arches to come into it’s own as the building filled with the warm light glowing from a sea of pillar candles on the windowsills, and the fairly light canopies hanging from above.

With a Groom called Asa it only seemed fitting to have the banqueting tables lined with fresh Acer, which couldn’t have looked more elegant than displayed amongst vintage brass candleholders with black taper candles.

But it wasn’t just about style, elegance and atmosphere. As the day turned to night the vibe changed. With a glitter ball hanging above The Arches beautiful Yorkshire stone floor, and entertainment supplied by an outstanding DJ who happened to be a friend of Maddie and Asa’s, the party had well and truly begun!

Maddie and Asa: It was a pleasure getting to know you both and seeing the vision of your wedding day come to life, however it was an even greater pleasure witnessing the love between the two of you. Your wedding was only the beginning of your adventure; the real fun has only just begun…

Love Abi xx

A Little Tropical Fun at The Arches

At Mode for… Events one of our most frequently spoken top tips has always been “Don’t plan your wedding day around the weather.” The weather should always act as the icing on the cake of a wedding, it should never be dependant on the sun shining gloriously or a crisp layer of white snow creating a picture-perfect image!

However, it can often feel serendipitous when the perfect weather for the style of the event happens to occur…

On the 26th May we opened the doors to The Arches for the wedding of Erin and Jordan and raised a glass to both their marriage and to the hottest and most beautiful day of the year so far! With the theme of the wedding being set as ‘tropical and brightly coloured,’ it was an easy brief to meet with regards to beautiful florals and greenery. Mode for…Event’s own styling featured a mixture of splendidly colourful flowers including sweet Williams complimented by vivid greenery such as ivy, eucalyptus and a sprinkling of moss. As an out of the ordinary tropical touch the banqueting tables also featured gold  sea creatures lovingly hand decorated by the groom. As temperatures soared to a balmy 27 degrees, you could definitely forgive guests for briefly confusing Yorkshire with the tropics while sat in our courtyard catching the sun and sipping ice cold drinks!

Tabby was in her element creating beautiful arrangements with the most vivid of flowers. As a request from Erin she used striking Ranunculus with a threaded finish for the bridal party’s buttonholes, with the addition of a variety of Lego pieces for the children’s buttonholes. The Lego pieces added a fantastically fun element to the buttonholes and allowed the suited and booted toddlers to have a bit of fun!

Erin and Jordan had aimed to have a fun and relaxed day to mimic both their character and their relationship. We think it’s fair to say that all involved would agree that they by far exceeded their initial brief, and blew their guests away with the additional detail they went into to assure all guests had an amazing day. From glitter face painting supplied by ‘Wish Upon a Sparkle’, to fantastic live music supplied by ‘Bare Brass Band,’ from flamingo topped naked cakes supplied by ‘Sweet Sugar Sixpence’ to our favourite VW camper van photobooth, Herman, supplied by ‘The Volkswagen Wedding Co.’ guests were entertained at every stage throughout the day! Plus, two ‘Arches firsts’ as we even welcomed a dance troop (featuring Erin’s Aunty) who kicked started the party in excellent fashion and a doggy ring bearer called Jack (the family’ Border Terrier) who also acted as Chief Videographer with a Go-Pro camera strapped to him (and he did an awesome job!).

Here’s to Erin and Jordan – may their marriage be as fun as their wedding, always entertaining, and with plenty of sunshine!

Hit The High Street for your Dream Wedding Dress

Come on ladies, admit it! We’ve all lost a good few hours over the years mindlessly ogling the beautiful gowns featured on programmes such as ‘Say Yes To The Dress.’ We watch the conveyor belt of designer dresses being pulled from the racks and tried on in glamorous stores and we formulate our opinion as if we were sat in the waiting room helping the lucky lady make her decision. However, anyone who’s ever tuned in will know there’s one golden rule that all girls wedding dress shopping should adhere too; never try on a dress out of your budget – it’ll only end in either disappointment, or a lack of food in your fridge for the foreseeable future!

But what if your budget is limited to whatever you can scrape together? Or if the reality of spreading your budget across the venue, the catering, the transport, the flowers, the suits and everything else that goes along with building the foundation of a fabulous wedding day, means that you have to sacrifice the flow of cash towards the dress? You still deserve a beautiful gown. You still deserve the style you’ve dreamed off. You still deserve that dress shaped piece to complete the jigsaw of your wedding day.

Fortunately, while the price of weddings is definitely on the incline (reportedly reaching an average price of around £27,000), beautiful wedding dresses have never been more affordable! As Gok Wan raved of on the fashion segment of ‘This Morning’ today, thanks a few trusty high street brands identifying the gap in the market for affordable yet stylish bridal wear, Brides all over the UK can now purchase beautiful dresses from as little as £69.99. Even Primark is jumping on the bandwagon with the introduction of their own Bridal range, currently including lingerie, nightwear, accessories and other novelty wedding related paraphernalia.

Here are a few suggestions on the shops to hit for the latest stylish yet affordable Bridal Wear:

  1. If you’re trying to keep your Bridal outfit below £100, then take a look at this pretty number from Quiz and Debenhams… With an on trend plunge back and a fishtail hem, this dress is sure to extenuate your beautiful curves! And guess what? It’s only £69.99! That’s right. You heard it here first ladies.
  2. If you’re looking for something with a little more sparkle then cast your eyes over this Little Mistress Dress… The embellished belt coupled with the layered tulle skirt creates a stunning silhouette. This £200 dress is perfect for any bride who wants to keep things classy and understated, but doesn’t want to hide her inner princess too much!
    Little Mistress
  3. Did you know good ol’ Dotty P’s are now designing wedding gowns too? They have a range of lovely dresses, but one of our faves has to be this LBD (little bridal dress!)…. This vintage inspired design featuring a sweetheart neckline under semi sheer lace is both dreamy and romantic, and for only £150 you can’t go wrong!
    Dorothy Perkins
  4. ‘What about something a little different?’ I hear you ask. Maybe something a little more festival inspired, with an edge of ‘Rembo Styling’ thrown into the mix?… Enter the ‘Bodyfrock Bridal Pleated Maxi Dress’ by ASOS. At the price of a mere £300 we can’t fault the delicate lace and the flared pleated cuffs.
  5. Always dreamed of a jewelled 1920’s style show stopper? Feast your eyes on this… You’ll find this beauty in Phase Eight, and although it’s one of our pricier recommendations at £595, we’re sure you’ll agree that the flattering silhouette and the dazzling embellishments warrant the price.

Although Bridal gowns have been found in the likes of Debenhams, Monsoon and lest we forget, BHS, for a number of years, it seems as though the high street in general has been slow on the uptake when it comes to the need for affordable bridal wear. However, I can’t help but feel as though this spluttering of brands joining the wedding industry is merely the beginning. I’d like to doth my cap to the brands making the bold move into budget bridal wear, and I’m super excited to see how the affordable bridal wear market will grow in the next few years. After all, everyone deserves their perfect wedding dress, regardless of their budget!

A Sun Shining Festival Affair

The sun shone beautifully in early April and it was out to stay for the wedding of Anna and Mark at Hargate Hall on 8th April. What more could you need for a festival inspired wedding in the middle of the Peak District for the most fantastic couple and their party loving friends?

But this was a wedding with a difference as Anna and Mark had legally married two years before in Gretna Green when the couple discovered they were pregnant with their super awesome son Zeph; so this was the party to end all parties which they had always planned….and my, what a party it was!

It was late 2016 when Anna & Mark contacted us at Mode for…Events as a recommended catering and coordination supplier at our favourite Hargate Hall and they came to visit us at home for a meal and chat through all things ‘Hargate Weddings.’ It was so great to get to know Anna and Mark and little Zeph (who is the most amazing little guy!) and soon we were on hand to not only supply some fabulous food, but to also help plan and coordinate the whole wedding, including design, styling and all the floristry, with bouquets, buttonholes and much more.

Anna wanted lots of colour and fun to be evident and with a brief of colourful lantern canopied ceilings and festoon lights, Tabby got to work planning the big event. There was colour everywhere with giant paper lantern instalments in the marquee with ‘floating bottles’ with single stems of blooms and the tables were filled with different bottles and vases of Spring blooms.

In the main house, we created a canopied ceiling of paper lanterns (all with individual LED bulbs) and festoon lights and hanging coloured bottles up the staircase with Spring blooms and fireplace was trimmed with a range of different brightly coloured flowers.

The bridal and bridesmaid bouquets reflected the fun, relaxed, colourful nature of the day but also worked well with the pastel pink hue of the bridesmaid dresses. In terms of fashion, the whole bridal party looked immaculate and full of style and grace, Mark complete with his feather adorned top hat and son Zeph looked like the most handsome trendy little guy and a heartbreaker!

anna and zeph

As Anna and Mark were already legally married, the ceremony was a truly personal event led by ‘Uncle Bill’ complete with his anvil in a nod to the Gretna Green tradition. The ceremony was full of love, laughter and fun before guests emerged into the sunshine for drinks, canapés and photos with photographer Steven Rooney Photography (plus his wife created an awesome photobooth in the evening! What a super talented couple).

Next it was time to head along the lantern lined path to the marquee for speeches and a relaxed meal of Antipasti sharing boards and Red Pepper Pesto stuffed Chicken with Dauphinoise Potatoes and green beans. The weather was so fabulous it seemed a shame to stay indoors so we then served dessert on the terrace in the sunshine with sharing boards of lemon and chocolate tarts. Every crumb of food went…it was a triumph!

With hot tubs and slip and slides there was plenty to keep people occupied but these guests were all party goers, so with the biggest festival ready sound system you’ve ever seen at Hargate, it was time to party, party, party….in fact, when Simon and I returned at 9am the next day to pack-up, guests were still partying! Oh, what a night!! There night time fun was accompanied by some simple perfect grazing food of pork pie cake, pies and a cheese tower.

This was such a fun wedding party and we have loved every minute of working with Anna, Mark and Zeph and so proud of everything we created from planning to coordination, food and styling, plus some lovely flowery fun. Congratulations Mr & Mrs & Master Sekree from all of us at Mode for…Events.

Fun & Laughter with Rosie & Dan

Elegant, relaxed, full of personal touches, and most importantly, fun! Sounds like a winning combo for a wedding doesn’t it?

Last month Rosie and Dan McKay made their vows in front of family and friends at The Arches @ Dean Clough, and our Mode for… Events ladies were on hand to help every step of the way. From the very beginning Rosie and Dan wanted a relaxed wedding with the main focus on their loved ones having a great time (and all the food and wine this foodie couple could muster!).

rosie and dan (caitlin and jones)
Rosie & Dan. Photo by Caitlin + Jones

Having embraced the raw beauty of The Arches’ exposed brickwork and industrial style, they were keen to keep styling simple yet elegant, and as chief stylist for this wedding, Tabby didn’t disappoint. Utilising a natural and earthy tone, Tabby used eucalyptus intertwined with pops of blush and burgundy roses to compliment both the venue and the beautiful theme of the day.

When it comes to personal touches Rosie and Dan’s wedding could never be accused of lacking! From the beautiful white and copper wedding cake baked and decorated lovingly by the Mother of the Bride, to the name cards hand written by a close friend, and the birthday balloons tied to the chairs of two friends celebrating their birthday on Rosie and Dan’s big day. It was abundantly clear that Rosie and Dan were surrounded by friends and family who were more than willing to lend a helping hand, and who couldn’t wait to celebrate their day with them.

As principal coordinator for the day Abi was on hand to make sure everything ran as smoothly as possible, and thankfully from the moment the confetti was thrown – to the sparklers being lit to celebrate the first dance, it was plain sailing.

Rosie & Dan with the Mode for…Events girls Tabby & Abi

Congratulations Rosie and Dan! As wedding planners and coordinators it’s always a sad moment when we realise we’ll no longer be working together, but we’re so honoured to have been a part of your day and we wish you all the luck in the world as you begin married life together.
